The city has roots back to the 7th century before the Vikings started to expand the settlement some two hundred years later. The Vikings, and then the English were drawn to Dublin as it's location makes well placed to be a trading center. Before the Industrial Revolution increased the size of other cities, Dublin was the second largest city in the British Isles after London. Today, it is a modern and vibrant city, though it also has cultural and historic areas. The Fair City has it's renowned Dublin University, there is Dublin Castle as well as music and sporting venues. The Guinness Brewery is also in the city, and it is worth trying a pint. The Post Office building is also a place of interest to visit as it was the scene of the failed Easter Rising of 1916.
