Are you a history buff at heart? If so, then the Roman ruins of Conímbriga Portugal, located about 20 minutes southwest of Coimbra, should be on your bucket list. When you visit this well-maintained site, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. The walled Roman settlement had some of the most beautiful architecture in the world and now lays in antiquated ruins.

In the year 1910, Conímbriga was declared a national monument by the government of Portugal. Each year thousands of people visit the area bringing with them a love for the Roman culture. If you come to this amazing location, make sure that you bring your camera so that you can share the beauty you find here with all your friends and family.

For your convenience, a visitor’s center has been constructed near the ruins. Here you will find on display a large selection of Roman items that were found on or near the site. Coins, pottery, utensils, and even surgical tools can be viewed. Each of these items has a special story behind them and adds to the magical feeling you get while you are there. A restaurant, café and gift shop is also located inside of the visitor’s center.
