Portugal is a peaceful, beautiful, and mesmerizing southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula of the Atlantic Ocean. The country shares eastern and northern borders with Spain. Panoramic views of the Ocean are showcased in the western and southern sections. The Portuguese Republic’s subtropical Mediterranean climate makes it an ideal destination for holidays.

Population statistics underscore that of the almost 11 million residents, around 97% are Portuguese. The official language is Portuguese, the sixth most spoken European language in the world. A small percentage of residents also speak English and French.

The people welcome tourists and there are many places to visit for relaxation, adventure, and amusement. Lisbon is the capitol and largest city in the country. The city and surrounding area has over 400 major attractions. Lisbon Oceanarium showcases some 8,000 animals, representing 450 species. Uniquely designed, the enormous aquarium displays a continuous ocean view. Each ocean features sea creatures and foliage native to the location. The shark breeding project is another interesting section.

Also near Lisbon, the Belem Tower hosts concerts, art exhibits, and other local events. Originally a medieval fortress, this landmark celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2015. Views of the Atlantic Ocean add to the charm of this location.

Feira da Ladra is for shoppers. This immense open market is essential as the oldest and most famous fair in the city. Souvenirs, genuine antiques, and crafts are for sale for just the right prices. There’s a historical flavor mixed in, the neighborhood of Alfama dates back to the 18th century. Bring your bargaining skills, enjoy the atmosphere as you browse among the tents and stalls.

For sea and sand lovers, Portugal offers spectacular selections. Marinha Beach (Praia da Marinha) is located on the coast in Logoa Municipality, Algarve. This is the most emblematic beach in the country. It is ranked as one if the 10 best beaches in Europe and ranks in the 100 enjoyable locations in the world. Its breathtaking cliffs and high quality water make it a favorite for promotional materials.

Odeceixe Beach (Praia de Odeceixe Mar), in Aljezur Municipality, Algarve’s Vincente Coast Natural Park, is known for its golden fine sand. Steep cliffs provide shelter and beauty. The picturesque small village of Praia de Odeceixe has a steep, scenic path that leads to the beach. A small cove is part of the experience. Visitors can rent gear and equipment for exploration. Lay back and chill is also a popular choice.

Praia da Adraga is located in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Travelers are impressed with the locale surf and colorful sunsets. The Sintra Mountains, ancient mountains of the Moon, provide climbing and mountaineering adventures. The Moorish Castle, the Pena Palace, and the Quinta da Regaleira are located here.

Day trips to the Cascais seaside are popular because of the mesmerizing scenery. Boca do Inferno features seaside cliffs and an open cave. The Santa Maria Lighthouse is a working facility and a visit there includes a museum on the property. Beachside casinos have eclectic entertainment. If you enjoy a faster pace this is the place to be. Most hotels in Lisbon will negotiate the trip.
