OPPORTUNITY IN BURIED WORDS
Walking down the street all by herself, Abike caught a glimpse of a piece of paper partially buried in the ground. She wondered what its content was as she was a voracious reader who always loved to read all that was written. She had walked past but on a second thought and filled with curiosity, she turned back to find out.
Abike was a nineteen year old girl, singlehandedly raised by her mother due to her father's death at her infancy. She was short, dark, chubby and in her first year in the university of Lagos. Although she had a good command of the English language, Abike was raised to communicate with people in her Ijebu dialect as the pride of a Yoruba parent was the child's knowledge of the culture.
On getting to the spot, Abike picked the poster up and dusted it. She figured out that it was an undergraduate scholarship offer which she had always wished for."I'm going to give it a shot" she said to herself smiling and thanking God that she eventually went back to read that piece of paper. She wondered how many of her mates had walked past the same thing and missed such a great offer. She prayed to God earnestly to make her dream come through.
Few months had gone by as Abike hurried home from an errand screaming in their local dialect "Maami, e wa wo" translated "mother, come and see". She scampered around the compound until her mother came eager to know the reason for her excitement."Congratulations, Abike. You have been awarded the winner of the Michigan State University Annual Undergraduate Scholarship for African Students"
Engulfed in her ecstasy, Abike's mother danced around singing praises to God and reigning words of blessings on her dearly beloved child.
