Novel writing can be an exciting endeavor or course. However, to write effectively, you need some fundamental and developmental aspects to become a real writer. Basics of narrative drive, plot, and story structure are essential. In the early stages, you will need feedback as you move from one step to another. Therefore, to become a novelist, some coursework is necessary.
A Solitary Project?
Writing novels is an individual project. However, a thorough and close reading, to check the coherence, should be done by a different person. In this scenario, story mechanics are broken down. Dialogue attribution can be handled by your mentor to identify the story transition. Paragraphs and chapters always follow what the mentor recommends, this way you are building from the writers' work. A trusted friend who can give you an insight on what you are doing is a massive step to successful writing.
Let it Rest
After writing, put it aside for two weeks and then reassess it to see any flaws in the material. The chances are you will discover weaknesses that can be improved while at the same time you are learning. After perfecting your work, give it to a friend or an editor to have a final word.
Study the World
To be a good novelist, you have to be curious about the world. Study the sound of rain, light reflections, reverberations, pets, hygiene, clothing, places, conversations, faces and more. Listen and look around you. You will find that the people you see next to you are the characters of your next novel. Watching news from all over should be part of your process too.
The Opinions of Others
Read expert opinions concerning writing novels. Having copies of books that guide you can transform your writing. For example, John Truby's "The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller." is an excellent guide. Write almost all the time and more importantly study the masters. Alternatively, join online writers' groups, and when you have the time, attend some or at least one writer's conference.
