Baleal and Its Impressive Geology

The picturesque fisherman's village of Baleal is located on a peninsula, connected to mainland Portugal by a stretch of golden sand and a thin stretch of beach.  The clean, unspoiled beaches along with the cool breezes, make it the ideal place to relax and play in the ocean. Enjoy a long stroll along the impressive geological rock formations that make Baleal so unique. The unique cliffs on the continental side are formed by limestone deposits which are the result of a major fault which exists between the two connected landmasses. As a result, there are spectacular and adventurous rock formations which create the perfect photo opportunity and which make this location iconic.

Baleal’s proximity to Peniche and Pria D'el Rey make it the perfect surfer's paradise for intermediate and beginner surfers. The waves are never-ending, and the blue-green waters are safe for swimming, body surfing, snorkeling, and many other water sports. Like many of Portugal seaside destinations, it is best to avoid beautiful Baleal during the holiday and vacation summer months of July and August when the crowds can be overwhelming. However, if you are looking for a less crowded option to surf capital Peniche, Baleal is only about a 10-minute drive away.

The restaurants, shops, and cafes are numerous here. Sip your morning coffee or afternoon wine while gazing out over the ocean to witness one of the most amazing sunrises, or, simply watch the fisherman set out for the day. This geological wonder of Baleal is only rivaled by the incredible colors you will see as the sun sets while you enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants or cafes located on the beach or in the village.
